The Latin American Training Center-LATC and the Municipal Council for Cultural Policy of Búzios are pleased to announce the launch of the competition “Discovering Búzios”, which will award feature film scripts (fiction or documentary) set in the city of Búzios, in the interior of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The competition also has the support of the Búzios Film Commission, aimed at boosting the local creative economy and increasing the international visibility of Búzios as a destination for filming and film tourism, placing the resort in the sights of major productions.

Divided into three categories, according to the language of the screenplay treatment, which may be Portuguese, Spanish, or English, the competition is open to screenwriters and filmmakers from Brazil and abroad. The best treatment in each category will receive a prize of USD 250, in addition to being widely publicized on the sponsors’ and partners’ websites.

According to Búzios Mayor Alexandre Martins, “We are excited about this new initiative that will encourage an essential activity in the cultural life and the creative economy of the municipality, in addition to serving as a catalyst for so-called ‘film tourism’, generating a positive impact on other sectors, with visits to tourist attractions and locations where films, series and soap operas will be filmed, on beaches, in hotels and other attractive destinations in our city.”

According to Steve Solot, LATC President, “This competition, in partnership with the Municipal Council for Cultural Policy of Búzios, and with the support of the Búzios Film Commission, represents a new initiative by LATC at the municipal level. It offers a unique opportunity for screenwriters and filmmakers in Brazil and abroad to present their creative ideas. It is also a great opportunity for the municipality of Búzios to stand out as a filming hub.”

Final jury members will judge treatments in specific languages as follows: Iafa Britz, producer of Migdal Filmes, (Portuguese), Susana Landau, Professor at the University of Buenos Aires (Spanish), Cesar Silva, President of Paramount Brazil (English), and Yanieska Genaro (Shanah), Director, Representative of the Municipal Culture Policy Council of Búzios, and President of its audiovisual section (all three languages).
