The Latin American Training Center (LATC) is pleased to announce that the first class of the 8th edition of the free social-inclusion course “Fazendo Meu Primeiro Filme” (Making My First Film), aimed at young people from communities and municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, was held on September 9 in Petrópolis.
“Fazendo Meu Primeiro Filme” is a social-inclusion project designed for under-priveleged communities and municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, using audiovisual production as a tool for transformation. Each class offers between 15 and 25 places for youth aged 16 to 25, who will l
earn filmmaking techniques and produce short films using their cell phones.
Previous editions of the course have included youth from many communities in the city of Rio de Janeiro and the state’s interior, such as: Babilônia, Vila Isabel, Cidade Nova, Ilha Grande, Guaratiba, Santa Cruz, Santo Amaro, Bangu, Júlio Otoni, Cesar Maia, Tavares Bastos, Pereira da Silva, Fallet, Morro Azul, Búzios, Vidigal, Cidade de Deus, Campo Grande, and at the Ilha do Governador unit of the General Department of Socio-Educational Actions – DEGASE.
The project is an initiative of the Cultural Council of the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association (ACRJ), in partnership with the Municipal Institute of Culture of Petrópolis, the International Institute of Film, Art and Tourism, the Petrópolis Chamber of Commerce and Business – ACEP, and the production company Ooppah Soluções Artísticas.
Taught by Professor Pedro Dannemann and with local coordination by Ariel Barbosa of Culturarte, the course provides an introduction to the audiovisual universe, encouraging young people to enter the professional film industry. The program covers everything from script development to image and sound editing, and classes take place in the Cine Humberto Mauro Auditorium at the Raul de Leoni Cultural Center.
A showcase of the films produced by the students is scheduled for October, for the students’ families and friends, as well as for local authorities and course sponsors.
Course Curriculum:
- Idea and script development
- Directing and film language: shots, sequences, scenes, and continuity
- Use of cameras (cell phone and other equipment)
- Direct sound recording
- Exposure and lighting: geometry of light, angles, and framing
- Image and sound editing (on computer or cell phone)
Since its creation, the Fazendo Meu Primeiro Filme project has carried out eight editions, benefiting more than 100 young people from 30 communities and municipalities
in the State of Rio de Janeiro, resulting in the production of 33 short films using cell phones.
The project is supported by various sponsors and institutional and strategic partners, including: Cinemark, L.C. Barreto Produções Cinematográficas, Motion Picture Association – Brazil, Michael Murphy (former Vice President of Universal and Paramount), ABC Cursos de Cinema, Atrevida Filmes, VIVA Productions, Paula Tupinambá Law Firm, Paramount Pictures of Brazil, RioFilme, the Audiovisual Industry Union – SICAV, the Inter-State Union of Workers in the Cinematographic and Audiovisual Industry – STIC, the Special Secretariat for Youth of Rio de Janeiro (JUVRio), and Conspiração Filmes, among others.
At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity
to compete for scholarships in technical courses at ABC Cursos de Cinema, LATC’s specialized English courses for the audiovisual industry, as well as the possibility of professional experience at a local production company.
