The Latin American Training Center-LATC and the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies of Florida Atlantic University-FAU announce the extension of the application period for students from Florida in the 2018 Brazil-Florida Student Screenplay Treatment Competition. Registered students now have until June 14 to send their application. For students from Brazil, the application period ends this Wednesday, May 30.

Focused on cross-border and immigration themes, the competition aims to encourage co-productions of feature films (fiction or documentaries) between Florida and Brazil, to promote location shooting in both regions, as well as to help new writers find success in today’s highly competitive film and entertainment industries. The competition is open to registered university students in Florida and Brazil. The participant must be a citizen or permanent resident of these locations.

Submissions must be in the form of a three-page treatment of a feature-length screenplay (fiction or documentary) in either English or Portuguese, with a cross-border or immigration theme. The first 30 treatments submitted from each region which are validated by LATC will be judged by a jury composed of one representative of LATC, one representative designated by Florida Atlantic University, and one representative of The Brazil International Foundation utilizing a ranking system according to criteria established in the Competition Regulations.

The first-place winning screenplay treatment from Florida and the first-place winning screenplay treatment from Brazil will each receive a U$500 cash award from LATC, toward development of the screenplays. Second-place winners will receive a cash prize of U$300 and third-place winners will receive U$200.

In addition, the three winning treatments from both Florida and Brazil (a total of 6 treatments), will be made available to production companies in the US and Brazil for possible acquisition, development and/or production. They will also receive a copy of the LATC publication, “Latin American Cinema Today: The Director’s Perspective”.

The results of the Competition will be announced in June, in press releases of the sponsoring organizations, on the LATC website and by other means to be determined by the sponsors and LATC.

The Application Form, Competition Regulations and Calendar are available on the LATC website: www.latamtrainingcenter.com

The initiative is supported by The Brazil International Foundation, REBRAFIC, the Brazilian Film Commission Network, and Forcine, the Brazilian Forum for the Teaching of Film and Audiovisual.
