US Film Industry Immersion Program: Focus on New York 2010

THE LATIN AMERICAN TRAINING CENTER WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER PROJECT PRESENTED “US FILM INDUSTRY IMMERSION PROGRAM: FOCUS ON NEW YORK”

June 20-24, 2010 – New York City

DESCRIPTION:

From June 20-24, in New York City, 20 Ibero-American filmmakers and other film industry participants in the US Film Industry Immersion Program: Focus on New York had the opportunity to experience an “immersion” into the commercial, legal, marketing, artistic, academic and new media aspects of the US audiovisual industry through an intensive schedule of meetings, presentations, seminars and other industry activities in the New York City area.

New York is famous for being the center for Indie filmmaking and the documentary community in the US and we will focus on this tradition. Co-productions and distribution with US independents and Hispanic producers in the US offer an important channel for Ibero-American producers to reach the US market. (See attachment 1). The LATC US Film Industry Immersion Program was open to Latin American and Iberian filmmakers, entertainment and media managers, lawyers, professors, US and foreign film students, executives and government officials. Producers and screenwriters are welcome to participate with or without film projects.

LATC has designed the US Film Industry Immersion Program and developed an exciting itinerary with its partners, the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). LATC’s Immersion Program in New York is aimed at increasing the presence of Ibero-American talent and audiovisual content in the US market, as well as promoting co-productions with the US.

PROGRAM:

Upon arrival in the US, participants will enjoy a welcome and orientation session. In the following days, the program includes a full-day session with the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) and sessions with the New York branch of the Producers Guild of America (PGA).  In addition, we will meet with other high profile film industry players in New York such as the Writers Guild of America (WGA-East) and the management company Circle of Confusion, which represents writers and directors such as the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix). The Oscar winning studios Focus Features and Sony Picture Classics, as well as Latin Film Distributor Cinema Tropical, are also on the agenda. HBO Documentaries and Indie Directors and Producers will hold sessions and panels. Other industry meetings include briefing sessions by a leading entertainment attorney, a film industry independent market consultant and top talent agency executive, as well as informal “pitching” sessions.

The thing in NYC is to blend in, so we will do as New Yorkers do and ride the subway, which is open 24 hours a day every day. Each participant will receive a MetroCard, a fare system pass which allows unlimited-rides for the days of our program. The subway is an integral part of the New Yorkers’ life and of the city’s melting pot culture.
