Already in its third edition and growing fast, the Fénix Awards, held in Mexico City on December 7th, highlighted great movies from Ibero-America, bringing together important names of these regions, like Sônia Braga, Wagner Moura, Gael García Bernal, Marisa Paredes and Fito Páez. For 18 days, over 15 thousand people attended the 21st edition of Lesgaicinemad, one of the most important LGBT film festivals in the world. The screenings took place at 17 different locations throughout Madrid and neighboring cities, and included the beautiful screening room of Matadero, a former slaughterhouse which has been converted to a large, diverse art center. A total of 110 movies, including 26 feature film, 30 documentaries and 54 short movies were screened. Photography exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and other activities rounded out the event. Created in November 2009 by Argentina´s INCAA Film Institute and the Marché du Film / Cannes Film Festival with the support of Creative Europe (European Commission). Ventana Sur is a Latin American Film Market that is attracting growing interest. Each year, as summer in the Southern Cone warms up, over 2000 accredited members descend on Buenos Aires. The winner of the 2016 LATC Latin America – USA Screenwriting Treatment Competition is Horizeo García from Cuba with “Connection”. Now produced as a short-subject film, it premiered in the Amsterdam International Documentary Festival-IDFA, one of the world’s most important documentary festivals. (more…)
